Ever since studying typography at the University of Reading, I have loved any kind of book, magazine, editorial or layout design. Picking typefaces, setting up baseline grids and using GREP styles are my favourite kinds of tasks, so when Dan and Steph at Tiger Finch approached me to ask if I would be interested in designing a book with them, I jumped at the chance.
The book is a 140-page historical account of Carey Baptist Church in Reading, who wanted to commemorate their 150th anniversary with a limited edition book. The text takes you right through the history of the church from its foundation to the present day, and also includes lots of photos and scans of adverts and church leaflets, making it a complex, but very interesting, project.
To keep production costs down, we decided to stick with black and white printing for the insides of the book, and also went for a standard A5 landscape format. The cover was printed in CMYK which meant that we could include a lovely flash of blue on the end pages.
I loved working on this project with Dan & Steph and they were extremely generous in sharing their expertise with me. They designed the cover and shot the new photographs for the insides of the book, while I did the typesetting.
